I have an old Honda 125 which runs on 6volts and i was told its easy to convert to 12volts?

I have an old Honda 125 that has an alternator with 3 wires off it. In the diagram there appears to be two winding coils - one for normal running and the other to boost the system when the lights are on.

I have been told that in order to upgrade to 12volts, i only need to replace the coil, battery, horn and bulbs-

Is this true?

Would it affect the life span of the alternator- which is near 40yrs old!?I have an old Honda 125 which runs on 6volts and i was told its easy to convert to 12volts?well me ide leave ''as is''...

you'll need ...

new stator.

rew reg/rec unit.

battery.

new coil.

flasher relay.

horn.

all bulbs...

ide still leave ot alone...just treat her to a new higher amp 6volt battery.I have an old Honda 125 which runs on 6volts and i was told its easy to convert to 12volts?
I've read you question and checked up on the data is your bike a CB125 K3 1970-71 model?

If so it has a seperate points housing on the end of the cam shaft and a three phase alternator. The set up being identical to that used in the CD175T

If that is the case you need to find a CB175T or the CB200T, these bikes were both 12 volts and higher capacity; though it is possible that you would need more than just the electrical

components you might need to have a new side cover manufactured.

If your bike is the earlier model it is possible that your bike is fitted with a GENERATOR rather than an alternator,

This is identified as being a large heavy metal cage that rotates around the outside of the stator; rather than an Alternator which has a small solid rotor that rotates inside the stator. If it is the GENERATOR then STICK to 6 Volts. it isn't worth it

as always desert camel has the right answerI have an old Honda 125 which runs on 6volts and i was told its easy to convert to 12volts?It's really 3 coils (that's why there's 3 wires). Two are used for daytime running, the third provides extra power for when the headlight is on.

In order to upgrade to 12 volts, the alternator windings (aka stator) must be replaced with a 12 volt unit.I have an old Honda 125 which runs on 6volts and i was told its easy to convert to 12volts?
You would need to replace the alternator/generator as well or have it re-wound.

There is a company called west coast re-winds that can do this for you along with recommending as voltage regulator for the generator output.

Ja.I have an old Honda 125 which runs on 6volts and i was told its easy to convert to 12volts?you will have to replace/rewind the stator, the stator you have will not put out 12v let alone maintain a battery. there are a lot of honda clone stators available for $20-$25 I highly recommend the upgrade, it is not that difficult after you do your first one. there are three wires, a green ground, a high voltage yellow and a center tap- white. don't forget you need any small 12v voltage regulator (I usually use moped ones like from a spree because they can handle quite a bit of current and are compact). you will also need a flasher relay (I use 552 universal 2 wire flasher relays, they are readily available from any auto parts store for $3)
